“We Need to Pray” Bible Study Lesson #4

Learing How to Pray Effectively

In recent lessons, we have learned how important prayer is in our walk with  God. So now the next question is, “How do I pray in a meaningful way?”

Luke 11 :1 “And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

Even the disciplies needed instruction in effective prayer. One step in effective prayer is to pray in the Lord’s Name.

John 16:23-26 ” 23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.  24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. 25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. 26At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:”

Pray in Jesus’ Name!

Matthew 6:5 tells us, ” 5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.”

Prayer is meant to serve the Lord – not to show everyone what we can do!

Matthew 6:6 6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

This doesn’t mean not to pray with others – or not to pray out loud fervantly at church. This scripture show us that we’re to have a personal prayer life with Jesus – some of our most intense, meaningful prayer comes from private time with Jesus.

Matthew 6:7 ” 7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”

Quality prayers- saying things from your heart with meaning, are more effective that long, repetitious, rambling prayers without thought.  If our minds and hearts are fully focused on Jesus – we can avoid vain repetitions.

James 5:1616Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
